Gas or heat pump: what to choose in 2026?
If mains gas is already connected and the house is older, a condensing boiler is often the cheapest investment. In a new, well-insulated house with underfloor heating, an air-to-water heat pump usually wins on annual cost. The answer depends on your house, so we compare scenarios, not slogans.
Initial investment
A gas boiler is usually cheaper to install if gas is already there. Without a gas connection, add connection cost and time. A heat pump system costs more upfront but needs no gas connection, flue or annual combustion checks.
Annual costs
We compare per kWh of useful heat: gas price divided by boiler efficiency, electricity price divided by heat-pump SCOP. Our comparison shows every assumption: prices with source and date, efficiency and annual heat demand.
Hybrid option
The heat pump runs most of the season and the boiler steps in on the coldest days or for large hot-water demand. Suits renovated houses with radiators.
